MAP · OVERVIEW
Câmara de Lobos is a fishing village clinging to the cliffs of southern Madeira, just a few kilometres from Funchal. Its colourful harbour, varnished boats and steep lanes give it a rare visual cohesion – that of a place not designed with tourism in mind. Churchill painted here in 1950, and the view from Cabo Girão – one of Europe's highest cliffs – remains its most serious geographical calling card.
The village is best visited between April and June, before the heat and the excursion groups that descend from Funchal cruise ships in summer. Half a day suffices, but spending a night changes the experience: in the evening, the fishermen reclaim the harbour. Come on foot or by bus from Funchal (route 154), and avoid restaurants with photographs of dishes in the window – the best espetadas are found in the streets behind the church.
