Guimarães - Paço dos Duques de Bragança
Wikipedia (fr) - CC BY-SA

Guimarães bears a title few cities can claim honestly: the birthplace of Portugal. It was here, in the twelfth century, that Afonso Henriques laid the foundations of a kingdom. The historic centre, UNESCO World Heritage–listed, has retained its medieval density without falling into museumification—people actually live here, cafés are frequented by students as much as tourists.

Spring and early autumn offer the best conditions for exploring the city on foot, summer heat potentially oppressive in the cobbled streets. Two days suffice to visit the Castelo de Guimarães and the Paço dos Duques de Bragança without rushing. From Porto, the train is the simplest solution—allow an hour and twenty minutes. Avoid limiting your visit to the castle alone: the Praça de Santiago, below it, is the true living heart of the city.
