What to see in Horta?

MAP · OVERVIEW

Horta is the capital of Faial, an Azores island whose reputation rests equally on its volcano and its harbour. The Peter Café Sport marina has for decades served as a rallying point for sailing vessels crossing the Atlantic, conferring on the town an unexpected cosmopolitan character for somewhere so isolated. Black basalt façades and gardens of blue hydrangeas lining the roads define an aesthetic peculiar to the Azores-spare and coherent.

The best season spans May to September, when inter-island ferry connections run regularly and Pico remains visible from the Monte da Guia viewpoint. Budget two to three days here, incorporating an excursion to Faial's caldeira. Resist staying solely in the town centre: most visitors miss the rest of the island by lingering around the harbour.
