Lamego sits in the Douro interior, moving at its own pace, far from the river boat tourism that sweeps through the region. Its identity revolves around wine prestige—Bairrada and Vinho Verde give way here to Douro appellation wines and sparkling wine caves—and dense baroque architecture, with the Nossa Senhora dos Remédios sanctuary and its monumental staircase as the most visible symbol.

Spring (April–May) and the harvest season (September–October) offer the best conditions. Two days suffice to explore the town and surroundings, preferably by car: local transport from Peso da Régua runs infrequently. Don't just focus on the Remédios staircase and ignore the historic centre—the Sé cathedral and its cloister deserve equal attention.
