MAP · OVERVIEW
Nazaré is a fishing town that has not yet lost its substance. Women in seven-layered skirts still exist here, not for tourists but because that is how things are done. The old town, Sítio, perched on the cliff, regards the Atlantic with an indifference that modern beach resorts have forgotten how to maintain. It is this tension between local daily life and the giant waves of Praia do Norte that gives Nazaré its distinctive character.
Come in October or November to witness the heavy swells without summer crowds, and budget two days, no more. The funicular connects the beach to Sítio in minutes and is worth riding for the view alone. Avoid the seafront in August: prices double and the beach vanishes beneath parasols. The municipal market remains the most honest place to eat dried fish without paying the postcard supplement.
