MAP · OVERVIEW

Óbidos is a medieval town ringed by walls you can walk around entirely in twenty minutes. For centuries, Portuguese kings gave it as a wedding gift to their wives, which gave it constant royal attention and remarkably well-preserved architecture. The historic centre still functions as a village: residents live here, cats sleep on the cobbles, and the local ginjinha is drunk from chocolate cups.

Two to three hours suffice to explore the Rua Direita and climb to Óbidos Castle without hurrying. Avoid July and August, when tour coaches turn the narrow streets into human traffic jams; September remains pleasant and noticeably quieter. From Lisbon, the bus is more practical than driving-parking within the walls is virtually impossible. Don't leave with bags of ginjinha grabbed from the first stands: prices double as you approach the main gate.
