MAP · OVERVIEW
Peniche is a promontory clinging to the Atlantic coast, two hours north of Lisbon, whose identity remains deeply tied to fishing and surfing. The Peniche fortress, once a political prison under Salazar, reminds you that this town's history stretches well beyond its beaches. The active fishing port sets the tone: you're nowhere near a packaged seaside resort.
May to October is the best period, though surfers come year-round for the Supertubos waves. Budget two to three days on site, hiring a bike to link the town to the Berlengas Nature Reserve, with ferries departing from the harbour. Don't concentrate solely on the northern surf spots: the town centre and its fish-canning heritage deserve a proper half-day.
