Silves still bears traces of its past as capital of the Moorish Algarve, an era when it eclipsed Lisbon in importance. Its castle, the red-sandstone Castelo de Silves, dominates a human-scaled town that mass tourism has largely spared. The neighbouring Gothic cathedral, built atop a former mosque, says much about the layers of history that quietly accumulate here.
Spring (April-May) is the ideal period: orange blossoms perfume the air and heat remains manageable. Two days suffice to explore the town on foot, basing yourself from Faro or Lagos. Don't confine yourself to the castle without descending to the centre's alleyways—that's where the town actually lives, far from tour coaches that arrive and depart just as quickly.
