Viana do Castelo - Praça da República

Viana do Castelo occupies a rare position: wedged between the Lima and the Atlantic, at the mouth of the Minho, it long lived by cod fishing and trade with Brazil. This dual maritime identity still reads in the Manueline façades of the historic centre and in the Basilica of Santa Luzia, perched on its hill and visible from half the town. It's not a city trying to please—it exists for its inhabitants first, which makes it all the more interesting.

Spring and early autumn offer the best conditions: the light is crisp, the Cabedelo beaches remain manageable and the summer crowds have vanished. Two days suffice to cover it without hurrying. The funicular climbs to Santa Luzia in minutes and spares you a steep walk. Avoid arriving on a Monday: many central restaurants close that day and the atmosphere noticeably dips.
