MAP · OVERVIEW
Košice operates at its own pace, well away from the usual Slovak circuits. The country's second city carries a Mitteleuropean identity forged through centuries of Hungarian, German and Slovak cohabitation. The cathedral of Saint Elizabeth, Gothic and massive, anchors a pedestrian street, Hlavná, that serves as salon to the entire town.
Spring and early autumn offer the best conditions for exploring the old town on foot over two full days. From Bratislava, the train remains the logical choice. Resist confining your stay to Hlavná alone: the adjacent quarters, less polished for visitors, reveal a far more interesting city.
