Bilbao has changed its skin without losing its soul. A former Basque industrial city now centred on culture and architecture, it retains a working-class directness that locals defend with pride. Frank Gehry's Guggenheim triggered urban transformation in the 1990s, but it's the Casco Viejo and its bar-counter pintxos that give the city its true pulse.
Spring and autumn offer decent weather without summer crowds-allow two or three days to explore without hurrying. Norman Foster's metro is clean, swift and covers the essentials. Don't confine your stay to the museum waterfront: the real city lies elsewhere, in the markets and bars of the San Francisco quarter.
