When to go

The mildest temperatures are in spring and autumn. From June to September, the hottest and driest months, daytime temperatures are usually above 30°C, and nights can stay above 20°C inland and in the south; the north, with Galicia, Asturias and Cantabria, is milder and rainier. From December to February, the coldest months are also the wettest, especially in the north; in the Canary Islands, winter is very different, and a light jacket is enough.

In 2025, Spain welcomed nearly 96.8 million international tourists, a record; there were 11.3 million in August, compared with 5.3 million in December.

Getting around

AVE high-speed trains link Madrid to the main tourist cities: from Atocha station to Barcelona, Seville and Malaga, and from Chamartín-Clara Campoamor to Valencia. The public company Renfe runs the AVE and its low-cost version, AVLO; the private companies Ouigo and Iryo operate on some lines.

Hozy tip

In San Sebastián's pintxo bars, cold pintxos are usually laid out on the counter and you help yourself, but hot pintxos are ordered at the bar. The custom is to have one pintxo and one drink per bar before moving on to the next, and to pay when you leave.
