What to visit in Spain?

18 cities curated by Hozy · 405+ places to discover. Landmarks, hidden restaurants, nature and viewpoints.

Spain runs on a timetable that most European travellers take several days to absorb: dinner before 9.30pm is the exception, the siesta isn't a myth in mid-sized towns, and social life plays out largely in the street. Each region claims a strong identity - Catalonia, the Basque Country, Andalusia or Galicia don't see themselves as mere variants of the same country.

Geographically, the territory splits into clearly distinct blocks: the arid central Meseta plateau around Madrid, the green and rainy Atlantic façade of Galicia and Asturias, the Mediterranean arc from Barcelona to Almería, and the Andalusian south with the Sierra Nevada in the background. The Canaries and Balearics add two further climatic logics, almost insular in every sense.

Good to know

When to go

Mid-September to late October and April to mid-June. Temperatures stay manageable, crowds thin after summer, and prices drop noticeably. July-August in Andalusia regularly tops 40°C.

Getting around

The AVE network (Spanish high-speed rail) links Madrid to Seville, Barcelona or Valencia in under 3 hours - fast and punctual. Away from the main lines, a rental car is essential, particularly in Extremadura, inland Galicia or the Alpujarras.

Hozy tip

In the tapas bars of San Sebastián, you don't order: you help yourself to the pintxos laid out on the counter and honestly declare what you've eaten when the bill comes. Arriving before 1pm spares you the crush.
