MAP · OVERVIEW
Salamanque owes its colour to a single stone: the golden sandstone of Villamayor, which bathes every façade in warmth even beneath grey skies. It has been a university city since 1218, and that antiquity shows everywhere-in the animated debates around Plaza Mayor, in the medieval libraries of the Universidad de Salamanca, in the rhythm of students bringing the streets alive well past midnight.
September and October offer ideal light and manageable crowds; July is suffocating and saturated with tour groups. Two days suffice to explore the historic centre on foot, which is easy to traverse. Skip the bus tours that stop for ten minutes in front of each monument: Salamanque deserves to be taken slowly, on foot, lingering in the interior courtyards of the old cathedral.
