MAP · OVERVIEW
Tarifa occupies continental Europe's southernmost tip, fourteen kilometres from Morocco. It's not an ordinary beach town: wind is a permanent fact here, almost an identity, that has shaped a world-recognised kitesurf and windsurfing culture. The old Andalusian quarter, ringed by Almohad ramparts, contrasts with the energy of Los Lances and Valdevaqueros beaches, where kites perpetually stripe the sky.
May-June and September-October offer the best periods, when wind remains present without July-August's extremes. Two to three days suffice to explore the medina and beaches without rushing. From Algeciras, the ferry to Tangier Med is within reach if you fancy extending into Africa. Don't rent a car for town-centre parking-lanes are tight and fines frequent.
