Hallstatt - Musée de Hallstatt (Hallstatt Museum)
Wikipedia (en) - CC BY-SA

Hallstatt is a village of 800 inhabitants squeezed between a lake and a rock face in the Salzkammergut. Its story rests on salt, extracted here since the Bronze Age-the Salzberg salt mine is the oldest still in operation worldwide. This geographic constraint shaped a vertical, dense architecture now replicated wholesale by an entire Chinese city.

Plan a full day, two if you're hiking to the Welterbeblick viewpoint or visiting the elevated mine. Come in May or September: summer transforms the lakefront into an organised-group traffic jam. From Salzburg or Vienna, the train to Hallstatt station followed by the five-minute ferry remains the most logical route. Resist lingering only by the water-the village climbs, and the essence lies higher up.
