Hasselt - Ancienne abbaye de Herkenrode
Wikipedia (fr) - CC BY-SA

Hasselt is the capital of Belgian Limburg, a city of human scale that has built its reputation on two unexpected pillars: genever and fashion. The Nationaal Jenevermuseum traces with rigour the history of this local spirit, whilst the city hosts the annual Hasselt Fashion Weekend, proof of a genuine creative scene. The pedestrian centre, compact and animated, runs at its own pace, far from the bustle of major capitals.

Spring and summer are the pleasantest seasons, particularly for enjoying the Japanse Tuin, one of Europe's largest Japanese gardens outside Asia, in full bloom. Two days suffice to cover the essentials without rushing. Hasselt is easily reached by train from Brussels or Liège. Resist concentrating your visit solely on the Quartier shopping centre: the city offers far more than its high street.
