MAP · OVERVIEW
Huy is a Meuse town that has managed to remain itself: neither open-air museum nor industrial ghost town. Its medieval centre fits into a few tight streets around the Collégiale Notre-Dame, and its citadel perched above the river recounts four centuries of European conflict without overplaying its hand. It's a passing-through town that deserves a proper stop.
Spring and autumn are the best seasons, when the Meuse banks are navigable without the summer crowds. Half a day covers the essentials, a full day if you climb to the citadel and wander along the quay. The train from Liège or Namur is direct and convenient. Don't limit yourself to the Grand-Place: the real soul of Huy lies in the sloping alleyways that climb towards the heights.
