MAP · OVERVIEW
Knokke-Heist occupies a singular position in Belgium: the country's most affluent seaside resort, it blends contemporary art galleries, Art Deco villas and the protected dunes of the Zwin. The Zoute seafront is nothing like an ordinary popular beach-it's a territory of second homes and designer boutiques that has attracted collectors and Flemish families for decades.
The best period extends from May to September, though June and September avoid the saturation of August, when accommodation prices double. Two or three days suffice to explore the Zwin nature reserve and cycle along the Kustlaan-the essential mode of transport here. Don't confine yourself to Knokke's shopping centre: the villages of Heist and Duinbergen, less visited, offer a more authentic atmosphere.
