MAP · OVERVIEW
Courtrai is a Flemish town that fully embraces its dual identity: former world capital of linen and contemporary city that successfully recycled its industrial wastelands into cultural spaces. The Battle of the Golden Spurs of 1302 is everywhere-in museums and on facades-without the town treating it as folklore. The Broelkaai and its two medieval towers reflected in the Leie set the tone: sober, solid, engaging.
Spring and autumn are the best seasons to visit, when the town still belongs to its residents. Two days suffice to explore the centre, the Fine Arts Museum, and the Leie banks by bicycle, the natural mode of transport here. Avoid Saturday afternoons in the Grote Markt: terraces fill with groups from neighbouring towns and local atmosphere evaporates.
