MAP · OVERVIEW
Thuin sits perched on a rocky spur above the Sambre in the heart of Hainaut. Its character emerges in its sloping alleyways, partially preserved medieval ramparts, and suspended gardens – the Jardins de la Dodaine – that tumble down towards the river. It's a Belgian provincial town that has held onto rare architectural coherence without sacrificing its everyday life to picture-postcard appeal.
Spring and autumn are the best seasons, when the gardens are lush without obscuring the valley views. Two hours will cover the upper town, but allow a half-day to walk or cycle the Sambre via the RAVeL path. Don't stick only to the classified belfry, which attracts tour groups: the alleyways behind the Collégiale Saints-Théodore-et-Hermès reveal far more of the place's soul.
