Espelette owes its global reputation to a chilli pepper, and yet this Basque village of Labourd deserves far more than a spice. Its red and white half-timbered houses, clustered around the church of Saint-Étienne and the château of the Barons of Ezpeleta, compose a village that has kept rare architectural coherence. Life still organizes itself around livestock and agriculture, far from folk reconstructions.
The best time falls in October, during the chilli festival, but the village merits a visit outside the season to appreciate it without crowds. A half-day suffices, ideally combined with Ainhoa or Saint-Jean-de-Luz by car, as public transport barely exists. Don't buy your chilli pepper in the shops on the main street: local producers sell directly at far better prices.
