Portofino is a fishing village reinvented as a refuge for luxury yachts, squeezed between Liguria and the sea. What strikes you first is the scale: everything is small, dense, almost unreal. The piazzetta and coloured port give the impression of a film set, but the alleys behind remain genuine. Castello Brown, perched above the water, offers the best vantage on the place.
Portofino is visited in a day from Genoa or Santa Margherita Ligure, preferably by ferry—the road by car ends in gridlock and parking is expensive. September is the ideal month: the light is clear, the crowds have thinned. Avoid lunching on the port itself; the prices do not reflect the quality. Instead, head uphill to find something honest.

Church of San Giorgio
Modest 11th-century Romanesque church dedicated to Portofino's patron saint, clinging to the cliff face with unobstructed sea views. It houses relics of the saint and an air of genuine devotion.

Piazzetta di Portofino
