Sirmione - Castello Scaligero di Sirmione
Wikipedia (it) - CC BY-SA

Sirmione occupies the tip of a peninsula that juts into Lake Garda, giving it an almost unreal geography: water is present on all sides. The Scaligero castle, a medieval fortress still standing by the water's edge, structures the historic centre and physically separates the village from the thermal zones that have given the town its reputation since Roman times. The ruins of the Villa Catulle at the northern tip remind you the site was already prized two thousand years ago.

Favour April-May or September to avoid summer saturation: in July-August, the peninsula becomes barely walkable. Two days more than suffice. Entry to Sirmione is on foot or by shuttle from external car parks—cars are forbidden unless residents. The classic trap: staying fixed to the centre's terraces when the eastern shoreline offers lake views without the crowds.
