Rotterdam resembles no other Dutch city. Flattened by bombing in 1940, it rebuilt itself as a laboratory of contemporary architecture, without nostalgia. The Markthal and the Kubuswoningen embody this deliberate identity: a city that chose the avant-garde over reconstruction.
September and October offer favourable light without summer saturation. Two days suffice to grasp the essentials, three if you explore the Katendrecht quarter. The tram efficiently covers most of the centre. Don't concentrate your visit on Blaak at the expense of the banks of the Meuse, where the city reveals more of its port character and true scale.
