What to see in Utrecht ?

Utrecht distinguishes itself from Amsterdam by a human scale that the capital abandoned long ago. Its dual-level canals-lower quays lined with terraces, upper quays for cyclists-create dense, authentic neighbourhood life. The Domtoren, a gothic tower separated from its cathedral by a quirk of history, sets the tone: this city owns its oddities with a certain pride.
Spring and autumn offer the best conditions for exploring the city by bike, the only means of transport that makes real sense here. Two days suffice for the essentials, including the Centraal Museum and its surprising collections. Avoid concentrating your visit around the station: the Hoog Catharijne district is a soulless shopping centre, whereas the lanes around the Oudegracht deserve your full attention.
