What to visit in Netherlands?

8 cities curated by Hozy · 240+ places to discover. Landmarks, hidden restaurants, nature and viewpoints.

The Netherlands operates on its own logic: a dense, flat, organised country where space has been managed as a carefully tended resource for centuries. Amsterdam draws the tourist flows, but Utrecht, Groningen or Maastricht offer a truer reading of Dutch daily life - brown cafés, neighbourhood markets, red-brick architecture lining the canals. A culture of political compromise, social pragmatism and a sharp sense of design run through every aspect of public life.

The country divides into several distinct zones: the urbanised Randstad in the central-west (Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague, Utrecht), Zeeland and its estuaries in the south-west, the Wadden Islands in the north, reachable on foot at low tide from the coast, and Limburg in the south with its hills - the only notable relief in the country. Rotterdam deserves particular attention for its contemporary architecture, rebuilt after 1945 without nostalgia.

Good to know

When to go

April to June: the tulips are in flower in the Lisse polders (Keukenhof), the days lengthen and the terraces open. September remains pleasant with fewer people. Avoid July-August in Amsterdam: total saturation.

Getting around

Cycling is the most efficient mode in town and between nearby cities - the bike-path network even links rural villages. For longer distances, the NS intercity train network is punctual and covers the whole country. A car is useless in city centres.

Hozy tip

Renting a bike in Utrecht rather than Amsterdam halves both the price and the queues. Utrecht's canals sit below street level - the terraces are at waterside, a layout you won't find in any other Dutch city.
