What to visit in Sweden?

Sweden operates on its own logic: silence isn't absence but a form of respect, and nature isn't a backdrop but a piece of social infrastructure. The right of public access (allemansrätten) lets anyone walk, camp and forage on private land - a rule that says a great deal about how Swedes think about common space. Stockholm, Gothenburg and Malmö hold the urban life, but the real country reads elsewhere: in the red villages of Dalarna, the granite islands of the Bohuslän archipelago, the conifer forests of Norrland or the tundra of Lapland.

The country stretches 1,500 kilometres from north to south, making it one of the most elongated in Europe. The north above the Arctic Circle - Kiruna, Abisko, Jokkmokk - runs on extreme seasons: polar night in winter, midnight sun in summer. The centre, with Lake Vänern and the Värmland plains, is an agricultural and industrial region travellers often overlook. The south, Skåne, feels more like neighbouring Denmark than Lapland: flat, fertile, dense with craft breweries and medieval castles.

Good to know

When to go

June to August for the midnight sun and the archipelagos. February to March for the Northern Lights in Abisko, with reliable snow cover. Avoid September-October: the days shorten fast and prices stay high.

Getting around

The SJ network efficiently covers Stockholm-Gothenburg-Malmö. North of Sundsvall, trains become scarce: renting a car is essential. The Inlandsbanan, a slow line running through the country's interior, is worth the detour in summer for the landscapes.

Hozy tip

ICA and Coop supermarkets close early on Sundays in small towns. Buy alcohol and supplies on Saturday: Systembolaget, the state alcohol monopoly, is closed everywhere on Sunday without exception.
