The country

Around 70% of Albania's territory is mountainous, with an average altitude of 700 m; the highest point is Mount Korab, in the east. The plains stretch along the Adriatic coast in the west, from Hani Hoti in the north to Vlora in the south.

The historic centres of Gjirokastra, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2005, and Berat, added in 2008, are rare examples of an architectural character typical of the Ottoman period. In the south, Butrint, inhabited since prehistoric times, was a Greek colony, a Roman city and then a bishopric; its site has been listed since 1992.
