What to visit in Albania ?

Albania still operates largely against the grain of European mass tourism: prices remain low, mountain roads are near-empty and the locals have a culture of hospitality - besa - that isn't a marketing line but a daily reality. Tirana itself surprises, with its communist blocks repainted in bright colours by former mayor and artist Edi Rama, and a café and bar scene that runs until dawn.
The country splits into three distinct bands: the Albanian Alps in the north around Shkodër and the Valbonë valley, ideal for hiking; the central plain with Tirana and Berat, an Ottoman town listed by UNESCO; and the Ionian coast to the south, from Vlorë to Sarandë, with coves reachable only on foot or by boat, facing Corfu.
Good to know
Aim for June or September. July-August on the Ionian coast is overloaded and prices double. In June, the sea is already warm, the mountain roads to Theth are open and temperatures remain manageable.
A car is the most efficient option: furgons (shared minibuses) link the main towns but schedules are erratic. Renting a car in Tirana lets you reach Gjirokastër, the Llogara Pass or Valbonë without depending on connections.
Albanian ATMs often charge high fees through the local Visa network. Withdraw lekë from Raiffeisen or BKT branches, which apply the interbank rate without a hidden conversion mark-up.
