In Scotland, Edinburgh's Old Town, dominated by a medieval fortress, and the neoclassical New Town, linked across the Waverley Valley, have been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1995. In north Wales, the castles of Beaumaris and Harlech and the fortified complexes of Caernarfon and Conwy, built during the reign of Edward I (1272-1307), have been listed since 1986.

In Northern Ireland, the Giant's Causeway, at the foot of the basalt cliffs of the Antrim plateau, is made up of some 40,000 basalt columns formed by volcanic activity 50 to 60 million years ago; it has been listed since 1986.

The UK lies in the westerly wind belt, on the edge of the Atlantic and its relatively warm waters, yet close to the continental influences of mainland Europe. The east and south are generally drier, warmer, sunnier and less windy than the west and north, and these favourable conditions occur more often in spring and summer than in autumn and winter.

Getting around

By train, Advance tickets are only valid on the date and train chosen; sold in limited numbers, they can be bought for most journeys up to 12 weeks ahead and up to 10 minutes before departure. On the road, you drive on the left.

In London, in 2026, entry to the National Gallery and to the Natural History Museum's galleries is free; some exhibitions are paid. At the Natural History Museum, a free ticket booked in advance guarantees entry on busy days, weekends and school holidays.
