MAP · OVERVIEW

Czechia runs at two speeds: Prague concentrates the tourist flows and a dense cultural life, while the rest of the country moves at a pace hurried visitors miss entirely. Czechs have a particular relationship with beer - not as folklore, but as a daily social practice - and an architecture that documents five centuries of history without major interruption, having escaped significant bombing in the Second World War.

The country organises itself into three large entities: Bohemia in the west, with Prague, Český Krumlov and the spa towns of Karlovy Vary; Moravia in the south-east, wine-growing and less visited, around Brno and Olomouc; and Czech Silesia in the north-east, industrial and often overlooked by classic circuits. The terrain stays moderate, with the Sudetes and Giant Mountains forming the natural borders with Poland and Germany.

Good to know

When to go

May-June and September are the best windows: temperatures stay between 18 and 25°C, the terraces are running, and Prague hasn't yet hit the July-August saturation. Avoid the Christmas period if you want to move around freely.

Getting around

The České dráhy rail network covers Bohemia and Moravia well; Prague-Brno takes 2h30. For the villages of South Moravia or the rural Sudetes, a car is still essential. RegioJet buses usefully supplement the train on certain routes.

Hozy tip

In Czech restaurants, the waiter notes your order on a paper slip left on the table - don't lose or move it; it's the definitive record at bill time, and any confusion causes real friction.
