🇮🇸 ICELAND · TOURISM

What to visit in Iceland?

1 city curated by Hozy · 22+ places to discover. Landmarks, hidden restaurants, nature and viewpoints.

Iceland plays by its own rules: roads close without warning, the Northern Lights only appear if the weather decides they will, and the people of Reykjavik go out for dinner at 9pm even on a weekday. This isn't a country to visit passively - it demands a certain openness to the unexpected, and that's precisely what makes every trip different from the last.

The island divides naturally into several distinct-character zones: the Snæfellsnes peninsula in the west, more accessible and often overlooked in favour of the south; the Westfjords (Vestfirðir), near-deserted and hard to reach, the rawest face of Iceland; the north around Akureyri and Lake Mývatn, with its active volcanic landscapes; and the east, lightly visited, where the fjords succeed one another without tourists.

Good to know

When to go

June to August for permanent light and access to the F-roads (highlands). September for the first auroras and fewer people. Avoid July if crowds around Skógafoss or the Glacier Lagoon would spoil it for you.

Getting around

A car is essential. Rent a 4x4 the moment your route includes the highlands or the Westfjords - F-roads are off-limits to standard vehicles. The Strætó bus network links the main towns but is slow and impractical for exploring.

Hozy tip

N1 and Orkan service stations act as real logistics hubs outside the cities: charge batteries, check tyre pressure and read real-time road conditions on road.is - do it every morning before setting off.
