The historic centre of Riga, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1997, is recognised as having the finest collection of Art Nouveau buildings in Europe, along with 19th-century wooden architecture. The Baltic song and dance celebrations, shared with Estonia and Lithuania, have been on UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity since 2008.

When to go

Latvia has four distinct seasons, with changeable weather. Winter can be snowy, with few hours of daylight, or greyer and muddier; the flat terrain suits cross-country skiing, and several downhill ski slopes rent out equipment. In spring, floods swell the rivers, and migrating birds pass through in spring and autumn; in May, bird cherries bloom in the Gauja Valley at Sigulda. Summer can be hot, and autumn colours the trees of Gauja National Park.

Getting around

Suburban trains link Riga to Tukums, Jelgava, Aizkraukle, Sigulda and Skulte. Since 26 August 2026, the Riga single ticket, which includes one train journey and 90 minutes on the city's public transport, is valid as far as these stations.

Hozy tip

In spring, when the rivers are high, is the best time to go boating down a river: the Amata is one of the fastest, the Gauja the most popular.
