Echternach - Villa romaine d'Echternach

Echternach is Luxembourg's oldest town, founded around the Benedictine Abbey of Saint-Willibrord in the 7th century. It developed on the banks of the Sûre, facing Germany, in a valley fold that gives it an almost enclosed character. The old town preserves rare architectural coherence for the region, with its Marktplatz ringed by half-timbered houses and its medieval courthouse.

Spring and autumn offer the best visiting conditions, when hikers exploring the Petite Suisse Luxembourgeoise are fewer. Two days is enough to explore the town and the rocky trails nearby. It's easily reached by bus from Luxembourg-City, avoiding high season parking headaches. Don't limit yourself to the abbey alone: the network of gorges and rock formations surrounding the town is what truly justifies the trip.
