The country

Luxembourg covers 2,586 km². In the north, the Éislek (or Oesling), part of the Ardennes massif, takes up about a third of the country; its main towns are Wiltz, Clervaux and Vianden. The rest of the country, including the capital, forms the Guttland. It includes the Mullerthal region, nicknamed Luxembourg's Little Switzerland, the Moselle valley, known for its winemaking, and, in the south, the Minett, shaped by iron ore mining.

Luxembourgish, French and German are the three administrative languages, and almost half of the residents are foreign nationals. The old quarters and fortifications of Luxembourg City have been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1994. The capital has hosted European institutions since 1952: it is one of the three seats of the European Union, and the Court of Justice of the EU, the European Court of Auditors and the European Investment Bank are based on the Kirchberg plateau.

When to go

At Luxembourg-Findel, the average temperature is about 1°C in January and close to 19°C in July, with around 830 mm of rain a year (1991-2020 normals).

Along the Moselle, wine festivals follow one another from July to October: the Wënzerdag in Ehnen on the third weekend of July, the Grevenmacher grape and wine festival on the second weekend of September, the Riesling Open in Wormeldange on the third weekend of September, then the Hunnefeier in Schengen, which marks the end of the harvest, on the third weekend of October.

Getting around

Since 1 March 2020, buses, trams and trains have been free throughout the country, for residents and tourists alike; only first-class rail travel is still paid for. In the Éislek, train line 10, from Luxembourg to Troisvierges via Ettelbruck, serves Clervaux and, on a branch line, Wiltz.

Hozy tip

For hiking in Luxembourg's Little Switzerland, the Mullerthal Trail, certified as a "Leading Quality Trail – Best of Europe" by the European Ramblers' Association, covers about 112 km in three routes of 37 to 40 km; the official website suggests daily stages and offers a luggage transport service.
