What to visit in Luxembourg ?
3 cities curated by Hozy · 71+ places to discover. Landmarks, hidden restaurants, nature and viewpoints.
Luxembourg is one of the rare countries where the capital holds, simultaneously, the seat of European institutions, a UNESCO-listed old town and wooded gorges ten minutes' walk from the centre. This small state of 2,600 sq km operates in three languages at once - Luxembourgish, French, German - and that linguistic layering says a lot about how the country is lived: neither really Belgian nor really German, with an identity built on discretion rather than assertion.
The country splits clearly between the reconverted industrial south, around Esch-sur-Alzette, and the wild north of the Luxembourg Ardennes, known as Oesling, where the villages of Vianden and Clervaux merit a serious detour. The Moselle valley runs along the German border and produces crémants and Rieslings that generalist guides tend to ignore. Between the two, the Mullerthal region, nicknamed Little Luxembourg Switzerland, offers eroded-sandstone trails that hold their own against any neighbouring natural park.
Good to know
April to June for hiking in Mullerthal before the summer surge, and September-October for the Moselle during harvest. July-August remains pleasant but Luxembourg City's sites fill up quickly.
Public transport has been entirely free since 2020 - trains, buses and trams cover the south and the capital well. For Oesling and the Moselle, a car is still essential: bus frequencies drop off sharply outside peak hours.
Luxembourgish restaurants serve judd mat gaardebounen - smoked pork neck with broad beans - mainly in spring. It's the real national dish, rarely flagged for tourists: ask for it by name, it isn't always on the terrace menu.
