Vianden - Église Sainte-Marie de Vianden (Collégiale)
Wikipedia (fr) - CC BY-SA

Vianden sits in a steep valley of the Our, wedged between Ardennes forest and the German border. The town owes its silhouette to the castle of the counts of Vianden, one of Western Europe's best-preserved medieval fortresses, carefully restored after decades of neglect. Victor Hugo stayed here in exile and left drawings of the site-a detail that says something about the effect the place produces.

Two days are ample to explore at leisure. Spring and autumn offer far more pleasant light and fewer visitors than summer, when tour coaches swamp the Grand-Rue. From Luxembourg City, bus 570 serves Vianden via Ettelbruck-prefer it to driving, as town-centre parking is a real headache. Skip the restaurants lining the bridge: they live by passing trade and price accordingly.
