What to visit in Malta ?

Malta fits into 316 sq km but packs in a rare historical density: megalithic temples older than the pyramids, Ottoman-repelled bastions, baroque chapels in every village. Life happens outdoors - on Valletta's rooftop terraces, in the cafés of Marsaxlokk facing the painted luzzu boats, in the narrow streets of Rabat where people still eat on their doorsteps. This isn't a contemplative country; it's a country that talks to you.
The archipelago has three inhabited islands: Malta, the main one, Gozo to the north-west - more rural, slower, with its salt-pan cliffs and carob fields - and Comino, nearly empty outside the summer months. Malta's north coast holds the beaches and the hotel complexes; the south, the rocky coves of Marsaskala and still-quiet fishing villages.
Good to know
April-May and October-November: temperatures between 18 and 24°C, swimmable sea, reasonable crowds. July-August regularly exceeds 35°C with heavy humidity and hotel prices doubled. December stays mild and nearly empty.
Buses cover the whole of Malta from Valletta, but connections are slow. For Gozo, the ferry from Ċirkewwa takes 25 minutes. Renting a car is still the most efficient option - note that they drive on the left and Mdina's lanes are impassable.
In Gozo, Victoria's bakeries sell ftira gozitan - a ring of bread topped with tuna, capers and gbejniet cheese - in the morning only. Arrive before 9am; the tourists haven't discovered the address yet.
