The country

The Maltese archipelago has three islands, Malta, Gozo and Comino, covering 316 km². Malta, the largest, is its cultural, commercial and administrative centre; Gozo, the second largest, is more rural, focused on fishing, tourism, crafts and agriculture; Comino, the smallest, has a single hotel and is largely uninhabited.

The Megalithic Temples of Malta, built in the 4th and 3rd millennia BC, are among the oldest free-standing stone buildings in the world and are on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Valletta, a fortified city founded in the 16th century by the Order of St John, has been listed since 1980: it brings together 320 monuments within 55 ha.

When to go

At Luqa, near Valletta, average highs range from about 16°C in January to 32°C in August; there is almost no rain in July, and most rain falls from October to January (1991-2020 normals).

In 2024, tourist presence relative to the population was highest in August and lowest in December.

Getting around

In Malta and Gozo, you drive on the left. For Gozo, the Gozo Channel ferry links Ċirkewwa to Mġarr in about 25 minutes; there are no reservations, and boarding is first come, first served. A fast ferry for foot passengers only also links Mġarr to Valletta's Grand Harbour.

Hozy tip

On Gozo's north coast, just past Qbajjar Bay, west of Marsalforn, the Xwejni salt pans are still worked: salt is harvested from mid-May to September and sold in local shops, sometimes directly at the roadside.
