🇱🇹 LITHUANIA · TOURISM
What to visit in Lithuania ?
1 city curated by Hozy · 24+ places to discover. Landmarks, hidden restaurants, nature and viewpoints.
Lithuania runs at a rhythm Western Europe has largely forgotten. Vilnius holds a dense, lightly visited Baltic baroque old town, where inner courtyards hide artisans' workshops and unsigned cafés. The country still carries visible traces of the Soviet occupation - not as a tourist curio but as a reality woven into the architecture, the collective memory and everyday conversation.
The geography is flat and wooded, dotted with lakes in the Aukštaitija Lakes region in the north-east, and opens onto the Baltic in the west via the Curonian Spit, a UNESCO-listed sand-dune belt. Kaunas, the second city, has developed an independent cultural scene that's often livelier than you'd expect. The interior, around Trakai and its lakeside castles, remains reachable in under an hour from the capital.
Good to know
May-June and August-September offer the best conditions: temperatures between 18 and 24°C, long days, still-reasonable visitor numbers. July is the warmest month but also the busiest on the Curonian Spit.
Intercity buses (Lux Express, Toks) are faster and better served than the train for linking Vilnius, Kaunas and Klaipėda. By car, the secondary roads towards Aukštaitija are drivable and give access to otherwise unreachable villages.
In Vilnius, the self-declared Republic of Užupis posts its own constitution on wall plaques in several languages. Hunting down the French version in the lanes around Paupio gatvė is worth the detour - and the read.
