The Danube Delta, where the river flows into the Black Sea, is the largest and best preserved of Europe's deltas; it is home to more than 300 bird species and has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1991.

In northern Moldavia, the eight churches of Moldavia, built from the late 15th to the late 16th century, have their outer walls covered in frescoes inspired by Byzantine art (listed in 1993). The historic centre of Sighișoara, a small fortified medieval town founded by the Transylvanian Saxons, and the wooden churches of Maramureș have been listed since 1999.

Romania's climate is a transitional temperate-continental one. In Banat and Oltenia, the Mediterranean influence brings mild winters and more rain, especially in autumn; in Dobruja, rain is rare but torrential; the east has a more marked continental character. In the north, Maramureș and Bukovina have a wetter and colder climate with harsh winters, and the Carpathian ranges a cool mountain climate that is humid all year round.

Getting around

To drive on the national road network you must pay the usage charge, the rovinieta; it can be bought online on erovinieta.ro, the platform of the National Company for Road Infrastructure Administration, or by SMS.

Hozy tip

Never feed bears: the ordinance adopted by the government in November 2025 punishes this practice, increasingly common in tourist areas such as the Transfăgărășan or the Bucegi, with a fine of 10,000 to 30,000 lei. Feeding a bear changes its behaviour, reduces its fear of humans and draws it into villages.
