🇭🇺 HUNGARY · TOURISM
What to visit in Hungary ?
1 city curated by Hozy · 24+ places to discover. Landmarks, hidden restaurants, nature and viewpoints.
Hungary runs on its own logic: an isolated language in the heart of Europe, a cuisine built around paprika and smoked lard, thermal baths woven into daily life the way other countries weave in cafés. Budapest concentrates a dense energy, but the country doesn't reduce to its capital - Hungarians themselves spend their summers elsewhere.
Lake Balaton, central Europe's largest lake, shapes summer holidays for half the country. To the east, the Great Plain - the Puszta - stretches to the horizon between Debrecen and the Ukrainian border. In the north, the hills of Eger and Tokaj produce wines that reward a detour as much as the landscapes do. The west, around Győr and Lake Fertő, looks more towards Vienna than towards Budapest.
Good to know
April-May and September-October offer the best conditions: temperatures between 15 and 25°C, active festival calendar, thermal baths without tourist overload. July-August is possible but Budapest becomes stifling and Balaton is saturated.
The InterCity train links Budapest to Pécs, Debrecen or Eger reliably and cheaply. For the Puszta and the northern villages, a car is still essential. The Volánbusz bus network covers rural areas, but midweek services are thin.
The Széchenyi and Gellért baths are fine but overcrowded. Go to Veli Bej or Lukács instead: same thermal water, local clientele, a third less to pay and no queue at the door.
