The country

Hungarian belongs to the Ugric branch of the Uralic language family; its closest relatives are Khanty and Mansi. It is the Uralic language with the most speakers, probably more than 13 million, around ten million of them in Hungary. Budapest officially holds the title of spa city: 123 hot springs and drilled wells deliver 70 million litres of water at 21 to 78°C every day.

Lake Balaton, nearly 600 km², is the largest lake in Central Europe. To the east, on the Great Plain, Hortobágy National Park, the puszta, has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1999 as a cultural landscape shaped by pastoralism. In the north-east, the Tokaj wine region has been listed since 2002 for its winemaking tradition and its cellars cut into the rock. To the west, Lake Fertő, shared with Austria, where it is called the Neusiedler See, has been listed since 2001.

In 2025, July and August accounted for about 40% of the year's overnight stays in commercial accommodation around Lake Balaton. In Budapest, visitor numbers are more even, with peaks in August and December.

Getting around

Since 1 January 2025, trains (MÁV), intercity coaches (VOLÁN) and Budapest's suburban railways (HÉV) have been run by a single company, MÁV Személyszállítási. Train and coach tickets are sold in the same places: the MÁV app, the online ticket shop and ticket offices.

Hozy tip

Budapest's historic thermal baths, including Széchenyi, Rudas and Lukács, are run by the municipal company Budapest Gyógyfürdői, which publishes opening hours, prices and closures on its website. Check them before you go: the Gellért bath, for example, has been closed for works since 1 October 2025, with reopening planned for 2028.
